Guadiana River

One of the great rivers of the Iberian Peninsula. Its origins are uncertain; legend has it that its source is the amazing Lagunas de Ruidera lagoons, but the more widespread theory is that the source lies in the high plains of Campos de Montiel in the province of Ciudad Real.

Its name comes from the Arabic, wadi-anas. Its basin has been calculated at 70,000 km2 and it is 818 kilometres long; most of it flows through Spanish territory, with part of it running through neighbouring Portugal.

From the Portuguese settlement of Pomarao, it runs down towards the Atlantic joining Portuguese and Spanish shores. On its way it passes through the neighbouring towns of Sanlúcar de Guadiana and Alcoutim. Both have castles and they are a pleasure to visit.

Various sporting events are held throughout the year, including the Ascent and Descent by Sail, which takes place in August, and the international canoeing regatta in July.

The following PDF file describes the navigable ascent of the river and includes a map. The other PDF file contains details of highlights along the route.

Ayamonte

An old town on the river Guadiana estuary, with nearly 20,000 inhabitants, a figure that swells in the holiday season.

It is the paradigm of a tourist town for its cultural wealth, its convenient location near Portugal, an enviable artistic heritage, a combination of progress and nature, and is largely unaffected by the influx of tourists.

Strolling round its neighbourhoods and streets bathed in the amazing light that floods it is a pleasure that no visitor should deny themselves.

Huelva

The province of Huelva is described as the undiscovered jewel of Andalusia.

Its mountain range, its coast, its villages, its landscapes, its culture, its climate and its light make the province of Huelva one of the most spectacular tourism destinations on the Iberian peninsula.

El Algarve

Portugal’s jewel in the crown, tourism wise.

Portugal’s southern coastline with its endless pine forests, its golden sandy beaches, luxury residential complexes, fantastic hotels and more than thirty golf courses, make this area the country’s jewel in the crown, tourism wise.
